Week 5 NFL Picks

Thursday, October 5

Chicago Bears at Washington Commanders -6

The Bears blew a 28-point lead versus the Denver Broncos. For sure, Chicago has some talent on offense. But the defense is a disaster.

On Sunday, Da Bears travel to Washington to take on a Commanders squad that feels they should be no worse than 3-1 after losing in overtime to Philadelphia. D.C. wins and covers.

NFL Week 5 Games

Sunday, October 8

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Buffalo Bills -5.5

The game takes place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, which is one of the reasons the Bills aren’t -9.5 chalks. Buffalo is the most complete team in the AFC.

The Bills do everything well on both sides of the ball. The matchup is sort of a home game for the Jags considering their ownership. But the Bills are simply much better.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Buffalo Bills -5.5

New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots -1.5

The Saints were terrible in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on their field. However, Tampa is a better team this season than many believed.

More importantly, New England has suffered injuries that should make winning difficult no matter who the Patriots play. Losing Jonathan Jones and Christian Gonzalez, their starting cornerbacks, is huge. But losing Matthew Judon, their best defensive players, spells the end of the Pats’ season.

Baltimore Ravens -4 at Pittsburgh Steelers

On paper the Ravens win and cover. However, this is one of the best rivalries in football. Mike Tomlin knows how to put together a game plan to contain Lamar Jackson.

So we shouldn’t expect the Edgar Allan Poes to dominate. No doubt, the Ravens can win. A 3-point game, though, seems more probable than a cover victory.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers +4

New York Giants at Miami Dolphins -11

The Giants are a mess, an absolute disaster. Even if Saquon Barkley plays, the G-Men are in for a tough afternoon.

Miami lost their first game of the season. The team will want to bounce back on both sides of the football. There is no way the Giants stop Miami’s offense from posting at least 30 if not 42 to 48.

So NYG will have to keep up on their end. That won’t happen because Daniel Jones loves to shoot himself in the foot and Andrew Thomas, the Giants’ starting left tackle, likely won’t play. Giants fall big time.

Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions -9.5

Carolina will struggle to keep pace with a Lions’ offense facing a depleted Panthers D. Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown and the rest will dominate Carolina without Shaq Thompson and Xavier Woods.

Even if those two play, the Panthers offensive line will struggle to keep Aidan Hutchinson and his mates from meeting Bryce Young in the backfield. Lions roar in NFL Week 5’s best bet.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Detroit Lions -9.5

Houston Texans at Atlanta Falcons -2

Houston’s offense is for real, but the way to counter the Texans’ offense is to do what Pittsburgh attempted in the second half of Houston’s NFL Week 4 win, rush the football.

Atlanta has Bijan Robinson. So if the Falcons feed the beast that is Bijan, they should control the line of scrimmage. Keeping the ball out of electric rookie C.J. Stroud’s mitts is the way to go and the ATL can do that.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Atlanta Falcons -2

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts -1

Both squads boast excellent rushing attacks. Derrick Henry, a sure fire hall of famer, leads the Titans’ rushing game.

The Colts lean on a couple of rushers, quarterback Anthony Richardson and Zack Moss. Because this happens on Indianapolis’s field, we must back the Colts. But if you have a good feeling about the tough Titans, go for it because this game may come down to the team with the final possession.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Indianapolis Colts -1

Cincinnati Bengals -3 at Arizona Cardinals

There is a real chance the Arizona Cardinals send Cincinnati to 1-4. The problem is that this is a terrible matchup for the Bengals.

Arizona ranks sixth in rushing yards per game. Team that rush the ball well almost always have an advantage because good rushing teams cut down on the number of possessions their opponents get. To make matters worse for Cincy and their fans, the AZ defense allows just 242.5 passing yards and the Bengals average 70 rushing yards, ranking thirty-first in the league. If the Desert Birds do lose, they keep the losing margin within the spread.

Philadelphia Eagles -4 at Los Angeles Rams

Philly has been escaping in games. Washington had a shot to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season, but Jalen Hurts and Philly rallied.

On Sunday, the Rams should provide the Eagles a defeat. The reason is because Los Angeles is one of the best passing teams in the NFL and the Eagles have one of the worst passing defenses. If the Rams can give Matthew Stafford time, he will find sensational slot receiver rookie Puka Nacua all day. Kyren Williams is also a talented pass catcher out of the backfield. Rams cover and should win straight up.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Los Angeles Rams +4

Kansas City Chiefs -5 at Minnesota Vikings

For the second straight week, the Kansas City Chiefs face a tough team on the road. Minnesota finally secured a victory in their last. The win was a quality effort, a 21-13 game over the Panthers.

KC should win this because they’re better. But giving a suddenly cheery Vikings’ squad 5 points on the road is tough. Minnesota is the play against the spread.

New York Jets at Denver Broncos -2

The Broncos rallied to beat the Bears in Chicago 31-28. Denver gave up 28 straight points before scoring a single point.

On Sunday, Denver tackles a New York Jets squad with an excellent defense. NYJ quarterback Zach Wilson had a great game versus KC. Although he lost a fumble, he didn’t throw a pick. More importantly, Zach completed over 71% of his passes for 245 yards and threw a couple of TDs.

Wilson should build off the effort. The Broncos will suffer a letdown after the rally against Chicago. So, yes, we’re going with J-E-T-S.

NFL Week 5 Pick: New York Jets +2

Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers -3.5

Dallas dominated a depleted New England’s defense at home a week after losing to the Arizona Cardinals.

Also, the Cowboys’ defense blasted Mac Jones, Rhamondre Stevenson, Hunter Henry, and Kendrick Bourne.  The Boys’s D won’t perform nearly as well versus Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle.

Dak will return to his bad decision ways. SF covers.

Green Bay Packers -2.5 at Las Vegas Raiders

This is one of the toughest games to handicap this week. For sure, we like the way Jordan Love and Green Bay’s offense has performed, but the Lions torched the Packers’ defense with the rush.

Josh Jacobs is one of the better running backs in the league. He should get it going on Monday night. Also, the Raiders’ defense stood tall versus Justin Herbert and the Chargers, yielding just 24 points in a 24-17 loss.

Vegas has played better than some might believe. Save for the 38-10 blowout loss to the Bills, the Raiders have a 17-16 win over the Broncos, a 23-18 loss to the Steelers, and the 24-17 loss to the Bolts. Raiders stand tall.

NFL Week 5 Pick: Las Vegas Raiders +2.5
